Haskell (Kan.)


Hailing from Lawrence, Kansas, the Haskell Indian Nations University is coached by Shane Flanagan (5th season). With a 23-6 (6-3) record in the Association of Independent Institutions, the Haskell Indians earned an automatic bid to the NAIA DII Women’s Basketball National Championship after winning the A.I.I. conference championship.

This year’s squad has five quality wins on its resume: def. then No. 15 College of St. Mary, then No. 9 Tabor, then No. 13 Oklahoma Wesleyan, then No. 21 Tabor, and then No. 4 College of the Ozarks. Tabor has earned the No. 3 seed in the Duer Bracket and is No. 20 in the NAIA DII coaches’ poll.

However, the Indians do have two “bad losses” on their resume, a 10-point Nov. 20 loss to Johnson and Wales University and a Jan. 22 loss to Northern New Mexico College, 83-75.

Sophomore forward Tyler Sumpter leads the Indians in points per game, netting 14.6. Junior guard Kourtney Meat leads the team in rebounds, averaging 4.5 per game, and senior guard Arnetia Begay leads the team in assists per game with 3.6.

The Indians are No. 3 in NAIA DII in steals per game with 12.5, and No. 8 in NAIA DII in total steals on the season with 362.
